Staff Attorney - Fulton General Law Unit

Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Staff Attorney for the General Law Unit, located in Downtown Atlanta. The General Law Unit provides advice and representation to persons in Fulton County in a variety of legal matters, including tenant protection, benefits (income and healthcare), consumer protection, and public school education. The unit is currently staffed by a managing attorney, three staff attorneys, and one support paralegal.

Attorneys in the GLU represent low-income persons in a wide variety of civil law problems, using a variety of methods, including full representation, brief service, advice and referral, transactional work, negotiation, and mediation. A significant part of this position entails litigation. The attorneys handle a mixed caseload, including housing, consumer, employment, health, public benefits, and education law issues. Attorneys provide community education to low-income persons and are encouraged to participate in local bar and social service associations.

Qualifications:

• Active member in good standing in the State Bar of Georgia (strongly preferred), or eligible to sit for the next Georgia Bar exam.
• 3-5 years of experience is preferred.
• Demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics or trial advocacy courses, familiarity with poverty law, and previous work with low-income people are strongly preferred.
• Strong work ethic and adaptability.
• Excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, listening, and organizational skills.
• Ability to balance compassion and pragmatism.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative, hybrid team model, with an appreciation for diversity.
• Proficiency in languages other than English is highly valued.

Salary and Benefits:

• The full-time salary is $61,000 per year for a new attorney (recently admitted to the Georgia Bar) and may be higher depending on relevant legal experience. The salary for a new attorney pending admission to the Georgia Bar is $56,000 per year and will be adjusted upon admission to the Georgia Bar. Salaries are reviewed and adjusted annually, depending on funding.
