Job Summary
The Convenience Store Cashier is responsible for providing friendly, efficient customer service while accurately handling cash and electronic transactions. This role includes operating the point-of-sale system, assisting customers with purchases, maintaining a clean and organized store environment, and supporting daily store operations. The ideal candidate is dependable, customer-focused, and able to work in a fast-paced retail setting while representing the company in a professional and courteous manner.
Responsibilities and Duties
Greet customers promptly and provide friendly, courteous service
Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system accurately for cash, credit, and debit transactions
Handle cash, make correct change, and balance cash drawer as required
Assist customers with product inquiries and purchases
Stock shelves, coolers, and displays; rotate merchandise as needed
Maintain cleanliness of the sales floor, counter areas, restrooms, and store exterior
Monitor inventory levels and report low or out-of-stock items
Follow company policies related to safety, security, and loss prevention
Verify age requirements and comply with all laws regarding tobacco, alcohol, and lottery sales
Perform basic food service or beverage preparation duties
Handle customer concerns professionally and escalate issues when necessary
Support opening and closing procedures, including cleaning and restocking
Work assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled
Qualifications and Skills
High school diploma or GED preferred
Previous cashier, retail, or customer service experience preferred (but not required)
Ability to pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening test
Must meet minimum age requirements for tobacco, alcohol, and lottery sales
Reliable transportation and consistent attendance
Strong customer service and communication skills
Basic math skills and attention to detail
Ability to accurately handle cash and electronic payments
Dependable, punctual, and trustworthy
Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
Willingness to learn store procedures and POS systems
Ability to follow safety, security, and loss prevention policies
Capable of standing for extended periods and performing light to moderate physical tasks
Team-oriented with a positive attitude
