MINISTER OF YOUTH JOB DESCRIPTION

I. General Information
A. The Minister of Youth position on the church staff is predicated on a call for unspecified duration.

B. The position of Minister of Youth will be predicated upon two truths. First, youth have very special needs, face many temptations, and need spiritual equipment thus requiring the attention of a minister who can give considerable time to them. Secondly, the Minister of Youth will have experienced a very definite call of God to serve as a full-time minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ and will manifest special gifts in relation to young people.

C. Historically this person will have completed appropriate college and seminary preparation.

D. The title, Minister of Youth, is in no way designed to be exclusive in character. The Minister of Youth will be considered a minister of the gospel in the fullest sense of that word. Though his primary duties will lay in the realm of the church youth program, he shall also have responsibilities in terms of church administration, evangelism, outreach, and may, on occasion, perform some duties usually considered pastoral in nature.

E. This staff member shall be granted the following privileges:

He will be permitted to assist in two engagements away from our local church field, and additional such meetings in the local area when these do not conflict with his regular duties.
He will be permitted to attend the Georgia Baptist Convention, Southern Baptist Convention, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Convention, or other professional meetings at the expense of the church and within the limitations imposed by the availability of funds for these purposes.
F. The church realizes that the work of any minister is demanding with respect to “being on call” and the total hours involved. The church, therefore, also realizes the need for adequate time off for rest, outside normal church office hours. The Minister of Youth will make himself available to parents of youth that feel a need to discuss youth related issues. This means that the church grants to all of its ministers the privilege of reasonable flexibility in adjusting their schedules and taking days off. Any minister serving this church is expected to be mature enough to exercise judgment in adjusting his/her schedule. Since people are constantly seeking to contact the ministers of the church, they are expected to keep the church office informed with respect to their schedule.

G. The Minister of Youth will, to the fullest extent possible, coordinate his absences from the church field with other staff members so as to ensure the needs of the church can be fully met. As soon as planned absences are scheduled, the Pastor will be informed.

II. Relationship to the Church
A. The church upon the recommendation of a special search committee, staff committee, finance committee, and deacons shall consider the call of a Minister of Youth.

B. He will be related to the church through the deacons, staff committee, and youth committee.

C. He will attend deacon’s meetings in order to keep this body informed about his work and to keep abreast of the wider scope of the church’s work.

D. The staff committee will be available to assist him in those ways commensurate with their normal responsibilities.

E. The youth activities committee will represent the church in matters of policy and planning with respect to the recreational program and other special events for youth that are not part of regular Sunday School, Church Training or music department programs.

F. During periods of church history, the Church Council has convened to prepare agendas, calendars, and other materials necessary for the planning and coordination of various programs and activities. The Minister of Youth will be a member of this council.

III. Staff Relationships
C. The Minister of Youth will be on parity with the other ministers; namely the Minister of Education and Minister of Music. He will cooperate with these ministers and all members of the staff to serve as a team in the work of our Lord.

D. He will comply with the statement of administrative procedures prepared for the church staff.

IV. Areas of Responsibility
A. General Statement with Respect to Overall Responsibility:
The Minister of Youth is responsible to the church through the deacons and youth committee for the overall development and promotion of the youth program.
He will exercise initiative in the promotion of the entire church program.
He will ensure that the Pastor is kept fully informed of the status of planning and progress of all facets of his work. This is of prime importance, as the Pastor bears the final responsibility for the overall church program. When the Pastor is asked by a layperson about a particular program or activity, he should have a basic knowledge of what is taking place.
He will study to maintain freshness and professional proficiency.
All staff members will work together to close the gap of a departing minister.
B. Specific Areas of Responsibility

He will at reasonable times be available for counseling.
He will exercise initiative in working with the leadership of the youth departments of Sunday School and Church Training for planning and promoting the educational programs of these units. This will be done in coordination with the Minister of Education.
He will maintain close cooperation and coordination with the local school calendars.
He will seek to win young people and involve them in the Savior’s work. This will require visiting in home and wherever contacts may be made.
Typical year-round activities might include things like Bible studies, Sunday evening fellowship hours, opening of youth center on Fridays, recreational and social events (trips to ball games, after game fellowships, banquets).
Additional special summer-time activities might include Bible studies, youth revivals, youth retreats, spiritual seminars, camps for children and youth; youth VBS and mission projects, recreational events, and others.
In the development of this program, the Minister of Youth will serve as the staff coordinator for the Youth Council. He shall be an ex-officio member of the youth activities committee.
In cooperation with the Minister of Music, he will assume responsibility for the youth portion of the creative ministry teams or other such joint projects of youth worship.
He will call upon the youth committee for assistance in preparing the youth budget for the unified budget.
He shall work in the area of outreach and visitation.
a. He will seek to discover newcomers to our community and others needing the gospel and Bible teaching ministries of our church.
b. He will share with all ministers of Thomaston First Baptist Church in visiting prospective members and lost people.

He will be the staff member responsible for working with any athletic teams representing the church.
He will lend his influence to encourage youth to participate fully in other areas of church life such as the music ministry.
C. The Minister of Youth, like all ministers at Thomaston First Baptist Church, must maintain a positive and cooperative working relationship with each other.

V. Summary
It should be understood that no job description could cover every contingency. The Minister of Youth will often, either by a request from will in the life of the church. Therefore, a minister of youth, though employed by the church, will do no less; but rather he will go above and beyond a normal working schedule to set an example and to inspire the congregation to give more freely of themselves. This church does not believe that anyone can minister or teach cross-bearing and have a forty-hour week concept of ministry. At the same time, the congregation will ever seek to be generous and flexible in dealing with its minister of youth with respect to flexibility in scheduling times away from work for ministry, family, and illness.
