Director of Parks, Recreation, and Facilities
Rate of Pay: Based on Qualifications
Status: Open Until February 12, 2026
- Establishes and implements city policies, procedures and standards concerning all Parks and Recreation business to ensure that the public is provided with well-planned and diversified recreation programs, well maintained parks, cemeteries, and Parks and Recreation building facilities.
- Gathers, interprets, and prepares data for research, reports and recommendations for decision-making purposes and requests from City Manager or City Council. Responsible for attending and participating in City Council (or committee meetings) concerning Parks and Recreation business.
- Directs the preparation and implementation of the department budget. The Director is responsible for controlling and monitoring department expenditures to ensure efficient fiscal management, providing cost estimates for capital improvements and labor budget.
- Directs department operations to include:
- Overseeing the compilation of written reports and documents on total operations, projects and development of services in the community.
- Making routine inspections of facilities and grounds.
- Monitor and review recreation program operations; advises the Superintendent of Recreation of any adjustments needed.
- Supervising and directing staff training and performance evaluations.
- Coordinates the acquisition, planning, design and construction of recreation and park facilities under the direction of the City Manager.
- Coordinates the planning, design, construction, renovation and rehabilitation of city buildings.
- Manages contracts for the maintenance of city/BLW facilities and grounds, and the operation of recreation programs for city facilities.
- Develops public information program to inform citizens of new and existing recreational activities. The Director will meet and address the various community organizations and general public to inform and receive feedback concerning the city's Parks and Recreation programs and activities.
- Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Public or Business Administration, or a related field (prefer master’s degree) and a minimum of ten years progressively responsible experience in a similar Recreation organization or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal recreation programs, building maintenance, landscaping, and some construction.
- Skilled in operating a PC using MS Office Suite programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, and other programs as needed.
- Knowledge of current personnel management practices and regulations.
- Knowledge of all relevant state and federal laws and regulations.
- Must have excellent communication skills both verbal and written. Ability to work in a political environment and deal with sensitive or volatile issues in an effective manner. Ability to make presentations and skill in public speaking.
- Ability to establish priorities, handle multiple priorities, and deadlines.
- Drug screen and criminal background check required at time of hire.
- Valid Georgia driver’s license (or obtain) at time of hire and a satisfactory seven-year driving history to include no DUI’s in the last five years.
Successful candidates are required to submit to drug screen, and background inquiry.
