Criminal Legal Assistant
We are seeking a Criminal Legal Assistant to join the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Georgia (USAO NDGA), in Atlanta, Georgia. In this role, you will assist Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Criminal Division by providing legal, litigation, and administrative support for active cases and daily office operations. I. Criminal Litigation Support
- Support Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) with day-to-day criminal litigation and legal administrative work
- Prepare, process, format, and file pleadings, motions, briefs, affidavits, and other legal documents
- Draft recurring criminal litigation documents using proper legal format and established procedures
- Prepare complaints, warrants, indictments, affidavits, summonses, and grand jury subpoenas
- Review incoming legal materials and determine document preparation, assembly, and filing needs
- Proofread and cite-check briefs, memoranda, pleadings, motions, and other court filings
- Assemble tables of authorities, tables of contents, exhibits, and court filing materials
- Compose routine legal correspondence, transmittal letters, notices, and case-related communications
- Conduct factual and legal research in legal and non-legal databases at attorney direction
- Search legal databases, indices, and computerized reference systems for precedent and case law
- Research statutes, regulations, legislation, court cases, and other legal authorities as directed
- Conduct factual research on individuals, companies, witnesses, and case-related entities
- Compile cited cases, opinions, statutes, references, and supporting materials for briefs
- Provide organized research findings and case-related information to attorneys for criminal matters
- Organize evidence and discovery materials for production, investigations, hearings, and trial use
- Prepare evidence summaries and summaries of witness interviews and meetings
- Maintain paper and electronic evidence, discovery, correspondence, exhibits, and case files
- Manage PDFs, images, audio, video, bank records, forensic reports, and other evidence files
- Code, index, search, organize, and retrieve discovery using litigation support tools
- Assist with document searches, first-level review, discovery organization, and production coordination
- Prepare witness binders, exhibit materials, and case documents for investigations, hearings, and trials
- Compile trial notebooks, jury instructions, witness lists, exhibit lists, and courtroom materials
- Prepare trial exhibits, charts, graphs, timelines, visuals, and courtroom presentation materials
- Provide automated litigation support for trial preparation, hearings, and courtroom presentations
- Use litigation support software, scanners, plotters, and related tools to prepare case materials
- Enlarge charts and photos, duplicate audio and video materials, and mark exhibits for trial use
- Coordinate with Victim-Witness staff on victims’ rights, services issues, and related notifications
- Open, update, track, and close criminal cases in the automated case tracking system
- Maintain paper and electronic case files, correspondence, briefs, evidence, and discovery materials
- Track case status, developments, deadlines, filings, hearings, trials, conferences, and interviews
- Prepare case status summaries covering factual issues, legal issues, developments, and next steps
- Maintain calendars, suspense systems, reminders, and deadline tracking for assigned active cases
- Provide attorneys with reminders for deadlines, appointments, commitments, and court appearances
- Search case files, legal references, and records for information needed by AUSAs and case teams
- Prepare files and records for screening, organization, disposition, transfer, or records storage
- Receive visitors and callers and provide appropriate information on cases, procedures, and office matters
- Determine which inquiries should be referred to attorneys and assess urgency for follow-up
- Maintain administrative files, litigation files, records, correspondence, and related office materials
- Review bills, invoices, litigation expenses, obligations, and related budget items for processing
- Assist with ordering supplies, processing timekeeping records, and maintaining administrative files
- Arrange travel, transportation, lodging, itineraries, authorizations, vouchers, and reimbursements
- Proficiency in Automated Litigation Support software applications
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to organize, manage, and retrieve legal documents, discovery, evidence, and case materials
- Ability to make responsible decisions on short notice and adapt to unexpected developments
- Strong legal document formatting, proofreading, and cite-checking skills
- Physically located within the general geographic commuting radius of the USAO NDGA office
- Valid driver’s license
- Demonstrated experience performing similar legal administrative, litigation support, and criminal case support duties
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- A four-year undergraduate degree preferred
- Additional legal training, paralegal education, or related coursework preferred

- Work may also be required at branch offices in Rome, Gainesville, and Newnan, GA
- Routine telework is not authorized
- Situational telework may be authorized
- U.S. citizenship is required as it supports the U.S. federal government
- Must be able to successfully complete required federal background investigation
- U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ)
- Travel may be required within the district or occasionally outside the district as needed
- Full-time, 40 hours per week
- Office hours are 8:30 AM–5:00 PM
