Grady Medical Legal Partnership Paralegal
Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Paralegal for the Grady Medical Legal Partnership (“Grady MLP”). Atlanta Legal Aid is a nonprofit law firm that represents low-income persons in a variety of civil legal matters, including family, housing, consumer, public benefits, education, and health law. The Grady MLP is a community-based, medical-legal partnership between Atlanta Legal Aid and the Grady Health System, a level 1 trauma center in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The Grady MLP aims to improve the health and well-being of underserved Georgians by coordinating services to address legal, social, and economic conditions threatening their health. The MLP is currently staffed by one part-time staff attorney and one paralegal who report to the managing attorney of the Decatur office. Work is performed at Grady Hospital in downtown Atlanta and in the Decatur office. In the future, the Grady MLP may become part of the Health Law Unit of Atlanta Legal Aid, which has an interim managing attorney, a staff attorney, and two support staff.
The Grady MLP represents clients in a variety of civil law problems, including public benefits and health insurance, disability-related issues, poor housing conditions, and family law matters. The MLP also coordinates with and trains doctors, social workers, and other health care professionals; recruits and trains volunteer attorneys; works with students in law, medicine, social work, public health, and bioethics; and participates in task forces and committees of other service providers.
Responsibilities:
- Case intake and management, including answering the phone, conducting initial client intakes and interviews, gathering documentation, and presenting cases to the staff attorneys and at case acceptance meetings
- Data management, including entering case information into Legal Aid’s client database and retrieving data from the Grady database
- Preparing reports for funders, medical staff, and hospital administration
- File management, including scanning documents into the client database, filing, and archiving closed cases
- Providing clients with information and advice under the supervision of an attorney
- Assisting with document preparation and organization, including trial binders
- Reviewing and summarizing medical records
- Notarizing documents
- Drafting client stories
- General administrative tasks and other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- An undergraduate degree or paralegal certificate is preferred
- Ability to communicate effectively with families, doctors, social workers, and hospital staff
- Interest in health law and poverty law
- Strong work ethic and adaptability
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication, listening, and organizational skills
- Ability to balance compassion and pragmatism
- Patience, compassion, has an even temper, and has good people and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative, hybrid team model
- Eager to learn and open to feedback
- Demonstrated commitment to public service and previous work with low-income people are strongly preferred
- Proficiency in cloud-based systems and software, such as Google Workspace, with a willingness to learn additional tools
- Proficiency in languages other than English, specifically Spanish, and a willingness to enhance language skills are highly valued
Salary and Benefits:
- The salary is $50,000 , and may increase depending on work experience. Salaries are reviewed and adjusted annually, depending on funding.

- Legal Aid offers a hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely, subject to management approval and a probationary employment period
