  • Creates, plans, implements, and coordinates orientation for individuals new to the nursing unit/department using the ANPD standards of practice including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation with the NPD Practice model using inputs, throughputs, and outcomes to ensure a systematic approach to onboarding orientation.
  • Adjusts implementation strategies as needed based on the learner’s developmental level, learning needs, readiness, ability to learn, language, and cultural preferences.
  • Engages learners in planned educational activities through use of effective facilitation skills
  • Creates, plans, implements, and coordinates activities related to training of new graduates, experienced nurses, and ancillary staff new to the unit/department based on collection of data that is used systematically and purposefully to ensure relevant and evidence-based learning for each clinician.
  • Develop/coordinates education plans related to initial and ongoing competency validation.
  • Activities include coaching of new nurses, facilitation of learning, using simulation, and tools that capture objective and subjective data about the individual’s knowledge base and actual performance.
  • Utilizes clinical problems to promote inquiry/investigation and improvement, follows through with competency assessment of new/changed skills and concepts.
  • Creates the safest environment possible for conducting assessment and observation of practice.
  • Collects data to evaluate and refine competency management activities.
  • Role models competent practice and facilitates a positive learning environment.
  • Performs needs assessment, gap analysis, environmental scanning and identifies high risk and problem prone related practices.
  • Designs engaging, interactive, state of the art educational activities/plans rooted in adult learning principles; implements and coordinates activities related to clinical practice and lifelong career development.
  • Integrates regulatory standards to meet the requirements for continuing education contact hours, when appropriate.
  • The programs/activities are based on identification of a professional practice gap/needs assessments, and current evidence-based practice/literature.
  • Programs are designed to augment the knowledge, skills and attitudes of assigned staff including continuing education, in-service education, continued competence training, or new information based on unit/department needs, organization initiatives/goals and policy revisions. Develops, incorporates, and implements evidence-based plans in collaboration with content experts, representatives of target audiences, and other stakeholders to support interprofessional/team coordination of care across the continuum.
  • Assists with students and practicing nurses to identify their learning needs, strengths, and opportunities and develops learning activities to grow skill sets based on learning needs.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of educational activities.
  • NPD Practitioner may assist others in their professional role development, practice role transitions, and succession planning.
  • Supports the preceptor program and provides support at the unit level to the preceptor.
  • Promotes certification and advanced formal education.
  • Promotes a supportive environment for students by collaborating with academic partners for student placement and a positive student experience. Implements the nursing professional development (NPD) initiatives demonstrating caring behaviors, respect, equity, inclusiveness and empathy in actions and interactions with others. 
  • Identifies opportunities for collaboration/partnership related to education and clinical practice.
  • Effectively communicates and collaborates with relevant stakeholders related to professional development activities.
  • Serves as a resource for clinical inquiry process, including identification of potential projects, and/or subject matter expertise. Demonstrates a “spirit of inquiry” to support professional curiosity including research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement initiatives using the organization’s preferred structure, i.e. PDSA (plan, do, study, act).
  • Works with others to identify problems and solutions and collaboratively create and assists in the implementation of the changes planned.
  • Creates a supportive environment for nursing research, scientific inquiry, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice.
  • Disseminates evidence-based practice findings through educational programs, courses, and other activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of word processing, data management, email, and presentation applications. (Required)
  • Effective professional communicator with strong interpersonal skills. (Required)
  • Knowledge of the American Nurses Association (ANA)/Association of Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) scope and standards for Nursing Professional Development (Required)

Education:
  • Bachelor's of Nursing [Required]
  • Master's of Nursing [Preferred]
Work Experience:
  • 2+ years nursing experience (Required)

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) [Required]
  • Basic Life Support - CPR Cert (BLS) [Required]
