Field Service Technician

The Packaging Equipment Technician installs, services, tests, and supports automated packaging equipment at customer facilities and in-house. This role requires strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and direct interaction with customers to ensure equipment performance, safety, and efficiency.
Essential Functions
Equipment Installation & Conversions
Install new equipment and perform machine conversions at customer facilities with minimal supervision.
Position equipment on the production floor and complete mechanical and electrical reassembly.
Install new or redesigned machine components.
Test individual components and conduct production trial runs.
Monitor production performance and recommend adjustments to optimize line efficiency.
Train customer personnel on proper operation and routine maintenance.
Complete service documentation, including service reports and customer exit reviews.
Follow up with customers and internal teams as required.
Field Service & Technical Support
Perform service calls, preventive maintenance, audits, and optimization support on packaging equipment.
Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and operational issues and recommend corrective actions or upgrades.
Observe equipment operation and identify performance or reliability improvements.
Provide on-site and remote technical support, including telephone troubleshooting.
Train operators and maintenance personnel on equipment use and upkeep.
Document service activities and maintain accurate customer records.
Machine Checkout & Testing
Power up, configure, and set up equipment for checkout and customer acceptance.
Download, edit, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI programs.
Perform product setup and test runs, including Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs).
Troubleshoot issues during checkout to ensure machines meet design and performance specifications.
Verify machines are shipment-ready with all required components and documentation.
Accurately document checkout and rework time.
Assembly Support
Assist with mechanical and electrical sub-assembly and final assembly of machines.
Work independently or collaboratively with assembly teams as required.
Document assembly and rework hours.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe assembly area.
Safety, Quality & Continuous Improvement
Report safety or quality concerns related to machines or customer facilities.
Identify opportunities to reduce equipment costs, labor hours, or improve processes.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
Associate degree in Automated Systems, Robotics, Electromechanical Technology, or a related field.
Minimum of 2 years of field service or packaging equipment experience (or equivalent hands-on experience).
Working knowledge of packaging or automated equipment assembly and checkout processes.
Experience using pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical tools, including hand tools, air tools, grinders, saws, drills, and lifting devices.
Technical Skills & Abilities
Solid understanding of electrical fundamentals, including Ohm’s Law and basic circuit theory.
Ability to troubleshoot wiring, electrical components, and sensors using meters and diagnostic tools.
Basic working knowledge of PLCs and HMIs, including RSLogix 500/5000 and PanelView Plus systems.
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and 3D models.
Strong mechanical, electrical, and basic programming troubleshooting skills.
Proficiency with standard computer applications, including Microsoft Office.
Ability to work independently, follow direction, and solve routine and complex technical problems.
