The McEachin Lab at Emory University is seeking a motivated and creative Postdoctoral Fellow to investigate the molecular mechanisms driving neurodegeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Our research focuses on RNA dysregulation splicing alterations and pathogenic changes underlying C9orf72-associated ALS/FTD with the goal of identifying therapeutic strategies to mitigate neurodegeneration (McEachin et al. Neuron 2020; McEachin et al. Cell 2025).
The successful candidate will design and conduct experiments analyze and interpret data and develop independent research directions within the scope of the labs mission. The fellow will receive advanced training in molecular neurobiology transcriptomics and therapeutic development with an emphasis on building the skills and research independence necessary for a successful academic career.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career.
- The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc.
- Designs and evaluates experiments.
- Develops new ideas that promote current research.
- Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
- May be responsible for operation of specific equipment.
- May teach techniques to others train and supervise research staff.
- Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee.
- The initial appointment is for one year renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available.
- Appointments cannot exceed five years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D. M.D. ScD. D.V.M. DDS etc) in an appropriate field.
- Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills.
- The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.
- Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design execute and analyze experiments related to RNA dysregulation and neurodegeneration
- Develop new research ideas and collaborations
- Prepare manuscripts and contribute to grant applications
- Participate in lab meetings seminars and professional development activities
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ph.D. in neuroscience molecular biology genetics or a related field
- Strong background in molecular or cellular neurobiology RNA biology or related areas
- Experience with mammalian cell culture molecular cloning or transcriptomic analysis is desirable
- Excellent communication skills and a strong publication record
This is a full-time temporary training position intended to provide postdoctoral research experience and career development in a collaborative and supportive research environment.
