EHS Coordinator/ Specialist - Industrial Manufacturing/Refrigeration Systems

The EHS Coordinator supports and enhances the site Environmental, Health & Safety programs with a strong focus on ammonia refrigeration safety, Process Safety Management (PSM), and Risk Management Plan (RMP) compliance. This role partners closely with operations, maintenance, and refrigeration technicians to ensure regulatory compliance, reduce risk, and promote a strong safety culture across the facility.
Some of the day to day duties, and main priorities for this role, include:
- Maintain and improve the site Process Safety Management (PSM) program for ammonia refrigeration systems.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119, EPA RMP, and IIAR standards.
- Conduct and coordinate PHAs, compliance audits, MOCs, SOP reviews, and mechanical integrity activities.
- Partner with refrigeration technicians and engineering teams to ensure safe operation and maintenance of ammonia systems.
- Track and close out audit findings, incident corrective actions, and regulatory recommendations.
- Support site-wide EHS programs including hazard communication, LOTO, machine guarding, ergonomics, and emergency response.
- Conduct incident investigations and lead root-cause analysis.
- Maintain EHS documentation, training records, and regulatory reporting.
- Facilitate safety training for employees and contractors.
- Participate in internal and external audits.
- Assist with environmental programs such as waste management, stormwater, air permitting, and SPCC (as applicable).
- Support sustainability and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Serve as a trusted resource for plant leadership and frontline teams.
- Promote proactive hazard identification and risk reduction.
- Lead safety committees, toolbox talks, and employee engagement activities.
The skill-set and experience profile we are looking for includes:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate or Bachelor degree in Safety, Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field preferred.
- 3+ years of EHS experience in food manufacturing, CPG, or industrial environments.
- Direct experience with ammonia refrigeration systems and PSM program administration.
- Experience working with maintenance, engineering, and refrigeration teams, with direct working knowledge of:
- Ammonia refrigeration system components and safe operating practices
- OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, and IIAR guidelines
- Incident investigation and root-cause methodologies
- Mechanical integrity programs
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Excel for tracking and reporting.
- Priority Consideration will be given to those that can bring as much of the following to the role:
- IIAR certifications (CIRO, CARO, or similar).
- OSHA 30-hour or equivalent safety training.
- Experience with food safety programs (HACCP, SQF, GMPs).
- Experience with contractor safety management.
- Ability to work in cold environments and around industrial refrigeration equipment.
- Ability to respond to emergencies, including after-hours events.
- Regular presence on the production floor.
