If needed, postoperatively, the nurse monitors patients in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), managing pain, vital signs, and potential complications to facilitate smooth recovery. The role requires close collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. Ultimately, the nurse contributes to efficient surgical workflow and enhances patient satisfaction through expert clinical practice and compassionate support.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Prior experience or clinical knowledge in perioperative nursing, including preoperative and postoperative care.
- Strong understanding of surgical procedures, anesthesia effects, and patient monitoring standards.
- Ability to work part-time day shifts as required by the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a hospital surgical setting, particularly in pre-op units.
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems used in perioperative care.
- Demonstrated skills in interdisciplinary communication and teamwork.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough preoperative assessments including reviewing medical history, medications, and allergies to prepare patients for surgery.
- Provide patient education regarding surgical procedures, anesthesia, and postoperative care to alleviate anxiety and promote understanding.
- If needed, monitor patients closely in the PACU, assessing vital signs, level of consciousness, pain, and potential complications following anesthesia.
- Administer medications and interventions as prescribed to manage pain, nausea, and other postoperative symptoms.
- Collaborate with surgical teams to ensure seamless patient transitions between pre-op, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.
- Document all nursing assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately and timely in the medical record.
- Maintain a safe, sterile, and organized environment in both preoperative and PACU settings in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
Skills:
The required skills enable the nurse to perform detailed patient assessments and deliver safe, effective care throughout the surgical experience. Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking are essential for identifying changes in patient status and responding appropriately in the PACU. Effective communication skills facilitate clear explanations to patients and collaboration with surgical teams, ensuring coordinated care.
