Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Chemical Laboratory Technician to support technical service and product development efforts within the resins and coatings group, with a focus on protective coatings for metal applications. This role involves hands-on formulation, application, and testing of both water-based and solvent-based coatings. The ideal candidate is safety-conscious, enjoys working in a collaborative laboratory environment, and is comfortable wearing a respirator hood for spray applications.
Job Description
- Weigh and mix materials precisely according to guided formulations or recipes
- Operate overhead mixers and high-shear disperser blades for pigment incorporation
- Adjust formulations using additives to control viscosity, flow, wetting, and foam levels
- Label, store, and manage samples and raw materials appropriately
- Safely operate and clean laboratory equipment following established protocols
- Apply coatings using wire rods, drawdown bars, and HVLP spray guns
- Prepare and spray paint panels inside a spray booth while wearing proper PPE, including a respirator hood and protective suit
- Dry and cure coated panels in ovens as required
- Pot life, viscosity, gloss, and hardness measurements
- Adhesion, abrasion, and impact resistance tests
- Corrosion, humidity, and chemical resistance testing
- Dry time, color retention, and accelerated weathering assessments
- Record and analyze results, maintain organized documentation, and prepare data summaries and reports
- Present findings to chemists, scientists, or technical leaders
- Maintain lab inventory and ensure a clean, safe, and compliant workspace
- Participate in safety inspections, audits, and safety improvement initiatives
- Collaborate effectively with chemists, other technicians, and technical specialists in a shared lab environment
Skills Required
- Demonstrated hands-on laboratory experience with coatings or related materials
- Familiarity with water-based and solvent-based coating systems
- Ability to wear a respirator hood for paint spraying applications
- Strong data collection and reporting skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office tools
- Excellent attention to detail, safety awareness, and teamwork orientation
- This position is 100% onsite in a laboratory and spray booth setting.
- Requires the use of PPE, including respirators and protective clothing.
- Involves handling chemicals and operating mechanical mixing and testing equipment.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with hands-on lab experience OR
- High school diploma with 5+ years of laboratory experience
Additional requirements
- Schedule: M-F 8am-5pm
Pay Rate
- $21.00 per hour and higher depending on experience
