Job Description

Job Description

McKenney’s, Inc. is seeking a licensed Structural Engineer to support our mechanical and plumbing operations. This role is embedded directly with project teams responsible for getting work built—requiring a strong appreciation for schedules, constructability, prioritization, and customer service. The successful candidate will apply sound engineering judgment to deliver safe, code‑compliant, and efficient structural solutions that enable successful installation of mechanical and plumbing systems.

JOB SUMMARY
The Structural Engineer (PE) will provide structural engineering services in support of mechanical and plumbing construction projects. This includes the design and review of pump skids, piping skids, equipment supports, pipe supports, seismic restraints, and wind restraint systems for mechanical equipment. The role works closely with internal operations teams, virtual construction, fabrication, and field personnel to ensure designs are practical, constructible, timely, and aligned with project schedules and customer commitments.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Design and seal structural calculations and details for pump skids, piping skids, and packaged mechanical systems.
  • Engineer pipe support systems including gravity, lateral, seismic, and thermal considerations.
  • Design seismic restraint systems for ductwork, piping, plumbing, and mechanical equipment in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Perform wind load analysis and design wind restraint systems for rooftop and exterior mechanical equipment.
  • Review delegated design submittals and shop drawings related to structural supports and restraints.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, seismic requirements, wind criteria, and referenced standards (IBC, ASCE 7, SMACNA, MSS, etc.).
  • Provide timely engineering support to operations teams to maintain construction schedules and address field conditions.
  • Participate in coordination meetings with internal teams, general contractors, and other trades as required.
  • Perform site visits to validate existing conditions, review installations, and support issue resolution.
  • Clearly communicate engineering intent to non‑structural audiences including project managers, superintendents, fabricators, and installers.
  • Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to standardize details, improve constructability, and reduce risk.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or similar.
  • Registered Professional Engineer.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of relevant structural engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing structural supports for mechanical, and piping systems along with seismic and wind restraints.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience supporting construction‑phase engineering within a design‑build or contractor‑led environment.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical and plumbing systems and how they are fabricated and installed.
  • Familiarity with seismic and wind restraint design for MEP systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced environment with competing priorities.
  • Experience reviewing shop drawings and delegated design packages.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND CHARACTERISTICS
  • Strong understanding of structural engineering principles as applied to MEP systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to translate engineering requirements into clear, practical direction for construction teams.
  • High level of organization with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong sense of urgency and accountability to schedules and commitments.
  • Customer‑focused mindset with appreciation for internal operations needs.
  • Professional demeanor and commitment to McKenney’s values and standards.
  • Self‑starter capable of working independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (Word, Excel, email, PDF markup tools)
