Substance Abuse Counselor

Position Summary
The Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for providing direct clinical services to individuals struggling with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. This role includes conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, facilitating individual and group counseling sessions, maintaining clinical documentation, and supporting clients throughout their recovery journey.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Services
- Conduct comprehensive assessments and psychosocial evaluations.
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on client needs, strengths, and goals.
- Provide individual, group, and family counseling services.
- Facilitate psychoeducational groups focused on addiction, relapse prevention, life skills, coping strategies, and recovery support.
- Monitor client progress and adjust treatment interventions as needed.
- Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings and case reviews.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain timely, accurate, and complete clinical documentation in accordance with agency, state, and accreditation standards.
- Complete assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, discharge summaries, and other required clinical records.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, confidentiality regulations, and ethical standards.
- Participate in utilization reviews and quality assurance activities.
Client Advocacy & Support
- Provide crisis intervention and support when necessary.
- Assist clients in accessing community resources and continuing care services.
- Collaborate with family members, referral sources, and community partners when appropriate.
- Support discharge planning and aftercare coordination to promote sustained recovery.
Professional Development
- Maintain professional licensure and/or certification requirements.
- Participate in clinical supervision, staff meetings, and training opportunities.
- Stay informed on current best practices, evidence-based treatment approaches, and industry trends.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or a related field.
- Certification or licensure eligible as a Substance Abuse Counselor in the state of practice.
- Knowledge of substance use disorders, addiction treatment, and recovery principles.
- Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
Preferred
- Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field.
- Active certification or licensure (CADC, CAC, ADC, LPC, LMSW, LCSW, LMFT, or equivalent).
- Experience working in residential treatment, detoxification, PHP, IOP, or outpatient settings.
- Knowledge of co-occurring mental health disorders and trauma-informed care.
- Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
