Manufacturing (Design) Engineer - Automotive Product Development Base Salary $100-140k + Annual Bonus Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Manufacturing Engineer who will take complete ownership of automotive components from initial concept through end-of-life. This role requires a unique blend of theoretical engineering knowledge and practical manufacturing expertise to rapidly prototype, design, source, and implement vehicle parts, tooling, and templates.
Key Responsibilities
Product Development & Lifecycle Management
- Own products through their entire lifecycle, from initial design concept through production ramp-up, manufacturing, and implementation.
- Rapidly prototype new components and assemblies to validate designs and manufacturing approaches
- Design parts, tooling, fixtures, and templates that are optimized for manufacturability, quality, and cost
- Source materials, components, and manufacturing services from qualified suppliers
- Implement new products into production, including process development, equipment qualification, and operator training
- Apply first principles engineering thinking to solve complex manufacturing challenges
- Analyze and optimize manufacturing processes for efficiency, quality, and safety
- Develop innovative solutions for tooling, fixturing, and assembly methods
- Create and maintain technical documentation including specifications, work instructions, and engineering drawings
- Utilize basic hand tools, additive solutions, and design tools to build prototypes, troubleshoot issues, and validate processes
- Understand equipment operation, maintenance requirements, and manufacturing capabilities
- Work directly on the production floor to implement changes and support manufacturing operations
- Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for quality or production issues
- Partner closely with Quality Engineering to establish inspection criteria, resolve non-conformances, and drive continuous improvement
- Work with Operations teams to optimize production flow, reduce downtime, and improve throughput
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and equipment used in automotive production
- Demonstrated ability to apply engineering fundamentals and first principles thinking to solve problems
- Proficiency with basic hand tools and mechanical aptitude for understanding how things are made
- Experience with rapid prototyping techniques and iterative design processes
- Knowledge of tooling design, fixture development, and template creation
- Ability to read and create engineering drawings and technical specifications
- Strong project management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities
- Experience in automotive manufacturing or related production environment
- Competent with CAD software, SolidWorks preferred.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
- Understanding of quality systems (ISO/TS 16949, APQP, PPAP)
- Experience with supplier development and qualification
- Hands-on experience with machining, welding, or fabrication processes is added value
- Systems thinking and holistic problem-solving approach
- Practical, hands-on attitude with willingness to work on the shop floor
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Excellent collaboration and communication abilities
- Self-motivated with strong ownership mentality
- Adaptable and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
- Detail-oriented with commitment to quality and safety
