Heavy Equipment Operator
Heavy Equipment Operator Bulk Handling Marine Terminal – Savannah, Georgia Position Summary The Heavy Equipment Operator supports bulk cargo operations at a Savannah-based marine terminal, safely operating loaders, dozers, excavators, and other specialized mobile equipment in support of vessel loading and discharge, truck and rail movements, and stockpile management.This role operates within an active port environment requiring strict adherence to safety standards, security protocols, Lean 5S standards and productivity expectations to support vessel turnaround times and customer commitments. Operators are expected to contribute to safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible terminal operations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Conduct and document pre-shift equipment inspections in compliance with company and port safety standards.
- Safely operate front-end loaders, dozers, excavators, and other heavy specialized equipment to:
- Load and discharge bulk cargo from ocean-going vessels and barges
- Load trucks and railcars for outbound shipments
- Build, manage, and reclaim stockpiles
- Perform terminal cleanup and material transfers
- Operate tandem dump trucks or similar equipment to transport materials within the terminal yard.
- Maintain safe working distances around vessel operations, stevedoring crews, truck traffic, rail movements, and other heavy equipment.
- Comply with all OSHA regulations, US Coast Guard requirements, and Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) security standards.
- Adhere to all Port access requirements and terminal security procedures.
- Report mechanical issues promptly and coordinate repairs to minimize operational downtime.
- Participate in safety meetings, job briefings, and required maritime safety training.
- Support terminal operations during peak vessel schedules, weather events, or surge activity.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support overall terminal productivity.
Qualifications - Minimum of one (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment, including loaders, dozers, and excavators; bulk material handling or port experience preferred.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening, physical examination, and background check.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on vessel schedules.
- Ability to work outdoors year-round in heat, humidity, rain, and other coastal weather conditions common to Southeast Georgia.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Understanding of bulk cargo handling procedures and marine terminal operations.
- Strong safety awareness in high-traffic, port environments.
- Ability to operate equipment safely around vessels, ship loaders, conveyors, and rail operations.
- Basic mechanical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, stevedores, and terminal personnel.
- Commitment to safety, productivity, and teamwork.
Work Environment Work is performed outdoors in an active marine terminal along the Savannah River. Employees may be exposed to heavy equipment traffic, vessel operations, dust, noise, and varying weather conditions including heat and humidity. Physical requirements include climbing up to 120 feet, boarding vessels, lifting up to 50 lbs., prolonged sitting, and manual labor.
