The Associate Vice President of Finance and Business Operations for the Academic and Clinical Enterprise serves as a finance leader in support of the academic and clinical programs with responsibility for the strategic direction, transformation, and financial and operational execution across the School of Medicine. The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Finance and Business Operations has a dual reporting relationship directly to the Dean and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs and the Executive Vice President Operations and Business Affairs. This role also has a dotted line in to the SVP and CFO for Morehouse School of Medicine. This role has the responsibility for the strategic direction, transformation, and operational execution of decentralized finance, budgeting, accounting, invoicing, and aligning workforce planning to budget for these units. This role serves in an advisory role to the Executive Vice President and Dean in coordinating with other campus officials on all matters related to policy, programs, finance, and people resources. The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Finance and Business Operations for the Academic and Clinical Enterprise serves as the principal business officer and advisor to the Dean and Executive Vice President of Health Affairs of School of Medicine. The AVP is primarily responsible for the business operations and financial administration of the MSM academic business units (academic, clinical, and administration). The AVP will partner with principle business officer overseeing research functions to ensure the functioning of research related business operations and financial administration of the MSM basic science units The Associate Vice President (AVP) is key principle in providing direction and leadership to the Directors of Finance and Business Operations and their teams (15-20) and unit leadership and Chairs to execute their operations and financial objectives. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated and proven ability to build a high performing finance and operations organization. This role leads a team of Directors of Finance and Business Operations (and their teams) for the units. This position plays a key role in standardization and flawless execution of decentralized finance processes, short-and-long range program planning strategies to assist academic and clinical units with achieving their mission and partners/collaborates with key research leadership to ensure compliance with various regulatory agencies. This leader will represent the Academic organization in discussions with the Dean, Chairs, Center, and Institute Directors, and will serve on various campus committees and advisory groups. The AVP will manage confidential and sensitive issues for the Dean; develop solutions for a wide range of issues related to decentralized academic finance and business operations to enable growth and scale for Morehouse School of Medicine. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES This leader is responsible for standardizing operational processes and policies across the Academic Enterprise in support of the mission and vision of Morehouse School of Medicine. The AVP works closely with the Academic Leadership, Academic Administration and the Directors of Centers, and Institutes as well as the extended leadership team, and MSM executives in meeting the strategic, operational, and financial goals of Morehouse School of Medicine. This role has a set of colleagues to partner and interface with the Associate Vice President of Research Operations and the Assistant Vice President of Central Administration to collaborate and coordinate. The Associate Vice President is also responsible for monitoring federal and state regulatory developments and changes to institutional policies, practices, and procedures to ensure that the institution is meeting the requirements of academic and accreditation agencies and partners. The leaders is also responsible for oversight and support of academic functions, including the registrar's office, student affairs functions and operations as well as student financial aide. The AVP plays a crucial role in supporting the Dean's vision and objectives for the Academic and Clinical mission areas, participates in developing and implementing MSM's academic mission, policies, objectives, and collaborative initiatives.   • This position is charged with strategic planning, achieving measurable contributions to the ongoing clarity of roles and responsibilities in research administration functions, streamlined business operations, continuous improvements in administrative communications and accountabilities, fiscal matters, and partners with Human Resources concerning people resources for the research enterprise.
  • Provide leadership for the effective management of change and transition within the institution.
  • Stewards the dissemination of best practices in decentralized finance to faculty across the
institution
  • Develops and maintains strategically directed, scalable, efficient Academic and Clinical
administration teams.
  • Promotes a culture of high performance and continuous process improvement for the research
enterprise.
  • Directs and coordinates all academic and clinical administration and financial services through
the Directors of Finance and Business Operations (across all clinical, academic, and administrative enterprise)
  • Supervise the Directors of Finance and Business Operations to oversee their needs, work, and
institutional requirements. This is in collaboration with the unit leadership (Chairs, Center Directors, VPs, etc.) - who have oversight responsibility with the Directors for work within their unit(s).
  • The evaluation of the Directors will be the responsibility of the AVP with input and collaboration
with the unit leaders. This is a yearly process.
  • Serve as the principal business officer and is responsible for leading and overseeing all financial
management and mission‐based management affairs (academic units, clinical departments, administrative units).
  • Will coordinate with the principal business officer responsible for leading and overseeing the
financial management and mission-based management affairs of basic science departments.
  • Attends all board meetings (i.e., Finance & Investment, Facilities & Administration, & Audit and
Investment) as needed. Provides the Dean, the EVP of Operation and Business Affairs and the CFO with financial information relative to the academic and clinical business units.
  • Participate in policymaking, particularly policies and procedures with financial implications and
provides counsel to department chairs and other leaders at the institution.
  • Partner with the Office of Human Resources in support the institutional Faculty Compensation
Plan through the financial modeling and compensation with central offices while working with unit leaders and Directors as needed for the success of the plan.
  • Works collaboratively with leaders of other administrative programs integrating business
practices and coordinating all stakeholders to ensure optimal results are achieved in financial management of teaching, clinical and research operations.
  • Plans, directs, and participates in the delivery of operational excellence programs that relate to
academic mission‐based management principles. Work with the Directors, unit leaders, and central office leaders on change management and execution of improvements in procedures, processes, and technology.
  • Serves as member of the EVP for Operations and Business Affairs with a dotted line to the SVP
Finance and CFO Leadership Team(s).
  • Work collaboratively with the EVP and Dean and leadership on mission related financial and
operational strategy and operations.
  • Partner with the DFBO for the Dean's office in providing oversight and support for the Dean with
for central student affairs, registrar, VA, etc.
  • Work with the Dean and Sr. VP for Operations and CFO in support of new and on-going
partnerships with outside organizations (E.g., CommonSpirit Health). This includes strategic leadership and business development for partnerships and new academic programs. OPERATIONAL
  • Provide leadership and guidance in establishing and maintaining an appropriate infrastructure
for the MSM Academic and Clinical enterprise. This includes driving continuous improvement in the systems, processes and people skills which support an effective academic enterprise.
  • Fosters an innovative and supportive academic environment that serves all disciplines and
campuses.
  • Manages and leads the functional units and workflow driving the academic enterprise at the
school.
  • Ensures research administration facilitates while monitoring project activity and ensuring that all
project activities comply with applicable laws and regulations, as well as policies and procedures.
  • Works collaboratively with other functional units at MSM to ensure best practices and seamless
business processes at the institutional level.
  • Meet weekly/monthly with the Directors and the unit leader to review unit objectives, goals, and
operations.
  • Communicate frequently with the Directors to support and help them through challenges and
needs for their units and MSM.
  • Responsible for report submission to EVP for Operations and Business Affairs and the SVP
Finance and CFO for Board of Trustees meetings (3 times per year).
  • Support (with the specific unit leaders) academic growth of graduate, doctoral, online and
medical programs though financial and administrative analysis. This coordination would be in conjunction with team members leading the effort.
  • Leadership of the Directors in their daily operations and communications with all operational and
financial constituents at MSM is critical to success.
  • Work collaboratively with the Dean, Unit leadership, and Directors on the annual budgeting
process for the mission related areas.
  • Devises comprehensive and effective systems of record management in compliance with
generally accepted accounting procedures and other compliance standards mandated by federal and state agencies.
  • Partner with the Office of Human Resources on faculty compensation plan data analytics and
other academic survey-related data. RISK MANAGEMENT
  • Provide leadership and guidance related to mitigating financial risk, ensuring sound financial
management.
  • Manage financial risk by implementing effective internal controls, compliance measures, and risk
mitigation strategies.
  • Monitor cash flow and liquidity, ensuring the organization's financial stability and the ability to
meet its financial commitments.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, laws, and reporting requirements.
Essential functions:
  • Responsible for overseeing MSM's academic finance portfolio.
  • Monitor federal and state regulatory developments and changes to institutional policies to
ensure that the institution is meeting the requirements of federal agencies and partners.
  • Developing and implementing MSM's academic and clinical policies and objectives.
  • Participating in annual budgeting for the academic enterprise and budget tracking.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE
  • Demonstrated record of promoting research, research partnerships, and other related
enhancements for the research enterprise
  • Preferred experience in higher education finance and operations.
  • Skilled in analyzing a variety of data, detail, and task oriented; ability to manage and perform a
variety of routine and complex assignments
  • Ability to establish and cultivate effective relationships and teams with various levels of
professionals internal and external to the organization
  • Demonstrated communication skills that include excellent organizational, people skills, and
strong verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a high-volume environment
  • Excellent time management skills and organizational abilities
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential matters appropriately

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of ten (10) years progressively responsible academic finance experience
  • Minimum of 5 years related experience in a leadership role.
  • Strategic alignment, research mission expansion and operational excellence is needed to succeed.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills are necessary in the role.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree from a regionally accredited institution in Finance or Accounting or a related
specialization is preferred; Terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution is strongly preferred
  • Fifteen (15)+ years progressive responsibility in higher education academic finance experience
  • At least 10+ years of related experience in a leadership role, demonstrated experience managing
other leaders.
  • The ideal candidate will have served as a senior leader of academic finance in a higher education
institution or a related industry environment.
  • The ideal candidate will have clinical financial operations experience.
