Material Handler

Department: Manufacturing / Production
Reports To: Operation Supervisor

Position Summary

A Material Handler is a vital position in the operation as the key function is to make sure that the saw and assembly work cells always have the material they need staged and ready to use when the operator or team in that area needs it. They should be equipped with tablets that have access to the various picking forms or schedule and radios that they would receive communication from the sawyers, leads at tables and supervision.

Employees are expected to adhere to all safety and quality standards, complete and successfully pass the lift truck certification training, maintain lift truck equipment safety inspection logs, and report any safety concerns to the supervisor.

Job Duties

A Material Handler is required to work with a team of people

· Selects lumber grades and lengths in accordance with ‘pick’ lists provided to ensure all the saws are able to continually cut lumber.

· Ensures the Ranger system lumber cartridges are always loaded.

· Assists in loading live decks on the linear saws when available. Can also assist the sawyer in stacking parts that come off the saws onto carts that will be staged at assembly tables.

· May be required to check material for accuracy of cutting set-up
Stacks and loads chords, web members and truss parts on carts.
Bands the material, marks the order number and type and moves to assembly areas where the batch will be staged.

· Responsible for positioning material in the staging area for assignment to the plant assembly lines.

· Pre Picks plates in bins for batches according to pick lists provided and then stage for assembly area.

· Is alert to needs that are communicated to him/her that come from assembly or saw areas. This could include pulling a board that needs to be recut, plates that are missing, etc.

Qualifications

Material Handlers must have the following qualifications:

· 2+ years of forklift experience in a manufacturing setting; preferably in construction or lumber

· Highly organized; able to manage multiple priorities

· Able to read and understand bills of lading to ensure accurate shipping and receiving counts of inventory

· Must be able to lift 50 lbs on a regular basis, stand or walk on their feet for long periods of time.

Working Conditions

Material Handlers are regularly on their feet loading and unloading inventory, supplies and other packages from various locations, like storage and production areas, delivery trucks and loading docks. The work will be performed in the warehouse and areas outside the building. Employee should dress for outdoor weather conditions.
