About the Position

Job Title: RN - MedSurg/Tele Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Medical-Surgical/Telemetry Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg/Telemetry RN experience License: Current RN license Certifications: BLS required; ACLS preferred; Basic Cardiac Rhythm competency required Must-Have: Strong clinical assessment and Med-Surg nursing skills for a Level 1 Trauma Hospital Description: RN - MedSurg/Telemetry position available. Facility has 637 licensed beds and a Level 1 Trauma Designation. Teaching hospital with a Chest Pain Center and a Stroke Center. Unit has 35 beds with a typical census of 35 patients. Patient types include orthopedic and trauma patients with various fractures and head trauma. Patients may have acute or chronic diseases and post-operative needs. Common co-morbidities include diabetes, hypertension, infections, CHF, and electrolyte imbalances. Patient ratios are 1:4-6 for RNs and LPNs. CNA support is available with 2-3 CNAs per shift. Key responsibilities include trach care, chest tube management, and IV starts. Experience with glucomander, insulin drips, and heparin drips is required. Strong clinical assessment and Med-Surg nursing skills are essential. IV insertion and care, as well as central line management, are required. Wound care and post-operative monitoring are critical components of care. Cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation skills are necessary. Care coordination with the interdisciplinary team is expected. Discharge planning and patient education, especially on renal and fluid management, are important. CNA duties include assisting with vital signs, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, and ambulating patients. Unit secretary support is available during certain hours, with a charge nurse who may also have patient assignments. Phlebotomy is conducted mostly by lab personnel, with nurses drawing from central venous lines. Resource nursing support is available, along with a 24/7 respiratory therapy team and hospitalist coverage. Telemetry monitoring is managed by a central telemetry unit. Technology used includes EPIC EMR, Alaris IV Pumps, and Phillips monitors. Unit-specific equipment includes vital sign monitors and glucose stat strips. Floating may occur to all adult med-surg and telemetry units as needed. Scheduling includes a weekend rotation of 5-6 shifts out of 12 on a 6-week schedule. Holiday expectations include working one shift of each major holiday. Requests for time off require manager approval. Shift times are either 7A-7P or 7P-7A. Unit culture is characterized as busy but supportive of teamwork.
