What We Look For In a College English Tutor

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of college composition, rhetorical analysis, research writing, argumentation, literary analysis, critical reading, MLA and APA citation formats, and academic discourse conventions. Ability to explain thesis development, evidence evaluation, synthesis of sources, and discipline-specific writing expectations while preparing students for college-level writing across academic disciplines.

Emphasizes developing academic voice and connects college writing to disciplinary conventions in humanities, social sciences, and STEM fields.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with college composition curricula including first-year writing and literature courses, and common challenges such as transitioning from high school to college-level analysis, integrating scholarly sources, and developing original arguments. Adapts instruction using model academic essays, peer review workshops, and individualized feedback to support college students from developmental writing through advanced composition courses.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
