General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate skilled trades work leading an offender crew operating large trucks with GVWR up to 65,000.00lbs, occasional or limited operation of light and medium equipment up to 35,000.00 lbs operating weight, performing a variety of tasks related to sanitation, roads, construction, maintenance, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the assigned supervisor (Division Chief, Environmental Management Director and/or Division Director). Close supervision is exercised over offender crews as assigned.

Essential Functions
Operates sanitation rear load packer trucks, roll off container trucks, tandem dumps trucks and single axel dump trucks over prescribed routes. Collects and transports refuse and trash to established disposal areas; operates a packer truck equipped with a hydraulic mechanism to dump refuse. Loads and hauls construction material and debris to and from various construction and maintenance projects.
Operates in street and pedestrian traffic, around utilities and in other tight places requiring care and skill.
Oversees, trains, and participates in manual work with offenders in refuse and trash collection as well as road construction and maintenance functions.
Transports offenders to and from work sites; performs routine head counts and searches of offenders for contraband or unauthorized materials.
Assists with seasonal roadway maintenance issues such as debris from flooding and windstorms, snow removal and ice control.
Operates a variety of heavy trucks including tandem dump truck, lowboy truck, trash truck, roll-off truck, grapple truck, fuel truck, and water truck
Semi-skilled operation of equipment to load trucks (excavator, loaders, skid steers, back-hoe)
Loads and hauls construction material and debris to and from various construction and maintenance projects
Responsible for securing and safely transporting material and loads
Understand that they can be called upon to be on-call at any time during storm events
Trains a crew of inmates to perform work in the field and alongside roadway
Responsible for spreading salt during ice storms
This position operates large trucks with GVWR up to 65,000lbs and hauls equipment in and around traffic daily

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities and limitations of vehicles and equipment used in area of assignment; general knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of equipment; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing vehicle operation; skill in the operation of light to medium duty equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to detect signs of mechanical failure of vehicles and equipment; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in the operation of medium-sized equipment and trucks, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work frequently sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy equipment, construction noises , and heavy traffic); ability to have full range of motion to safely operate County vehicles/equipment.
Special Requirements
Prerequisite for this position is successful completion of a basic skills test that meets the standard for Peace Officer Standards and Training certification – if selected for consideration you will be provided information on the skills test.
May require additional safety training or certifications.
Obtain Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Corrections Officer and National Safety Council Flagger certifications within six months, which requires:
- At least 18 years of age
- A US Citizen
- High School diploma or state issued GED Certificate
- Possess good moral character
- Complete a personal interview
- Free from any physical, emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect exercising the essential tasks or duties of a peace officer
- Successfully complete the POST Entrance Examinations (Accuplacer)
- No felony convictions, misdemeanor of domestic violence or multiple misdemeanors
Favorable background history as determined by review of local, State and Federal records.
Valid commercial driver's license Class B minimum in the State of Georgia with favorable driving history (MVR).
