Senior Architectural Historian

Atlanta, GA
Environmental At Jacobs, we're challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world's most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission-critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting-edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.

Your impact

At Jacobs, you’ll work for a company that strives to provide opportunities for employees to learn, grow, and thrive. As Southeast Senior Architectural Historian, you will lead cultural resources projects across the southeastern United States, primarily for transportation, water, and energy infrastructure projects. There is an immediate need for cultural resources support for infrastructure projects in Georgia and Tennessee. Based on availability, you may also lead other projects throughout the United States, including providing cultural resources support for planning, engineering, and construction services to water, Department of Defense, federal civilian, and other government and commercial clients. The Architectural Historian career path provides the opportunity to work on projects that require compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and other federal, state, and local cultural resource regulations.

The Senior Architectural Historian confidently develops strategies for compliance with federal, state, and local cultural resources regulations and solutions for complex projects. You will serve as a key team member working with planners, scientists, engineers, project managers, and other project staff across business sectors in the company and will interface with clients and coordinate consultation with State Historic Preservation Officers, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, Native American tribes, and multiple state and federal agencies. You will also prepare proposals and cost estimates, provide technical reviews of deliverables, provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level employees, and serve as a mentor within the cultural resources group.

Here's what you'll need

  • Master’s degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Public History, Architecture, or a related field
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in historic preservation or a related field
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Teams
  • Proficient reading architecture and engineering plans
  • Oral and written English communication skills
  • Must be willing and able to travel, as needed, approximately 15 percent of time.
  • Expertise in every step of the Section 106 process, including but not limited to:
    • Delineating an Area of Potential Effect
    • Initiating consultation with project stakeholders
    • Literature reviews and background research
    • Developing historical contexts
    • Organizing and conducting field surveys
    • National Register eligibility determinations
    • Assessment of Effects reports
    • Developing and implementing agreement documents
    • Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record/Historic American Landscape Study documentation
  • In-depth knowledge of environmental procedures governing the identification and evaluation of historic resources for various agencies in Georgia and Tennessee, including the Georgia and Tennessee Departments of Transportation (DOT). Relevant experience includes conducting cultural resources literature reviews, historic resource surveys, and serving as a primary author and technical reviewer on reports for the Georgia and Tennessee DOTs
  • Experience interfacing directly with staff at the Georgia and Tennessee DOTs and State Historic Preservation Offices
  • Experience working in the consulting environment, able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and be responsive to both internal and external clients
  • Knowledge of and experience with ‘recent past’ resources, such as Ranch houses and mid-twentieth century commercial buildings
  • Experience preparing proposals and cost estimates
  • Experience providing technical reviews of deliverables

Ideally, you'll also have:

  • Familiarity with NEPA, Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, and Section 4(f) of the U.S. Department of Transportation Act
  • Section 106 experience with transportation, energy, and water infrastructure projects, including familiarity with environmental procedures for FHWA, FTA, FRA, FERC, EPA, HUD, and USACE
  • Working knowledge of GIS and mobile data collection applications, such as Google Earth and ArcGIS Field Maps
  • Experience conducting Section 106 historic resource evaluations for infrastructure projects across the southeast (including Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas, and Kentucky)
