Code Enforcement Officer

MUST MEET MINIMUM REQUIREMENT: Requires Associate Degree or two years of course work at a trade or vocational school preferably in inspection or code enforcement; and two (2) years of work experience in inspections, code enforcement, or public safety; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Georgia driver’s license (Class C).
NATURE OF WORK: This position is responsible for technical work including field inspections and the determination of compliance with City codes, ordinances, and regulations. Work involves educating the public on code/ordinance compliance and the correction of violations.
SOME OF THE ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES INCLUDE: Patrols assigned areas in the City. Inspects and enforces erosion control/environmental ordinances; monitors development and building sites to ensure compliance of state and local erosion and sedimentation control regulations. Conducts inspections and enforces codes related to upkeep of property and health/ sanitation. Inspects sites prior to land disturbance and issues utility permits with special instructions that must be met for installation; monitors site through completion. Enforces City sign ordinances. Inspects residential and commercial properties to ensure compliance with solid waste ordinances. Analyzes field inspections to determine compliance or noncompliance. Notes code and ordinance violations; makes recommendations to correct violations; notifies residents, property owners, developers, and contractors of results of inspections; explains necessary corrective requirements; and conducts re-inspections to ensure corrective action has been taken. Issues warnings, stop-work orders, and citations when violations are not corrected; prepares documentary evidence; appears in court; and testifies against persons issued citations. Prepares and uses standardized forms to issue warnings for code and ordinance violations.
Prepares and submits monthly reports and maintains records regarding inspection activities including inspections completed and violations discovered. Provides information and explains codes/ordinances to residents, property owners, developers, contractors, and the general public; receives and responds to reports of alleged code ordinance violations from citizens or staff. Prepares related reports, memos, and correspondence. Continues training with emphasis on current computer applications, supervisory role, and job related duties as determined by the Department. Operates City vehicle in the performance of duties and/or to attend training programs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is sedentary work and requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
SELECTION PROCEDURE: Selection will be made from a register of eligible applicants that may be established by education, work experience, polygraph, personal interview, credit check, criminal history, driving history, (copy of drivers’ license may be required), drug screen, and/or physical examination.
Starting Salary: $52,940.59
