Position Summary

The Cafeteria Manager is responsible for the safe preparation, service, and management of daily meals and snacks for children enrolled in the childcare program. This role ensures that all food is prepared according to nutrition guidelines, allergy and dietary restrictions are followed, inventory is maintained, and the kitchen remains clean, organized, and compliant with health and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve daily breakfast, lunch, and snacks according to menu plans and nutrition standards.
  • Ensure all meals meet state licensing, CACFP, and health department requirements.
  • Follow all food allergy and special dietary needs for enrolled children.
  • Carry and deliver food trays safely to classrooms or designated serving areas.
  • Maintain accurate food and kitchen supply inventory, including tracking usage and notifying management of low stock.
  • Receive, store, and rotate food properly using safe food handling practices (FIFO).
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen, storage areas, equipment, and food preparation surfaces.
  • Wash dishes, utensils, trays, and cookware daily.
  • Dispose of food waste and trash properly and safely.
  • Complete daily cleaning and sanitation logs as required.
  • Ensure proper temperatures for food storage, cooking, and serving are maintained and documented.
  • Participate in inspections and follow corrective actions as needed.
  • Communicate with administration regarding menu needs, supply shortages, or safety concerns.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in food service, childcare nutrition, or institutional kitchen preferred.
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and allergy awareness.
  • Ability to lift and carry food trays, kitchen supplies, and food boxes as needed.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and perform physical kitchen tasks.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and follow structured procedures.

Required Certifications (or ability to obtain)

  • Food Handler’s Permit / Food Safety Certification
  • CPR/First Aid (preferred)
  • Any state or local required childcare or food service training

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 30–40 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, bend, reach, and walk throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment.

Work Environment

This position works in a commercial kitchen within a childcare center and involves daily interaction with staff and indirect interaction with children. Safety, cleanliness, and attention to detail are essential.
