About the Role:
The Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ED RN) working full-time night shifts from 7pm to 7am plays a critical role in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to patients experiencing urgent and emergent medical conditions. This position requires the nurse to rapidly assess, triage, and manage a diverse range of patient presentations, ensuring timely interventions and coordination with multidisciplinary teams. The ED RN is responsible for monitoring patient status, administering medications, and performing necessary procedures while maintaining accurate documentation. Working primarily during night hours, the nurse must adapt to a fast-paced, often unpredictable environment, demonstrating resilience and sound clinical judgment. Ultimately, this role is vital in stabilizing patients, facilitating smooth transitions of care, and supporting the overall efficiency and safety of the emergency department during overnight operations.
Responsibilities:
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments upon arrival to the emergency department, prioritizing care based on acuity and clinical presentation.
- Administer medications, treatments, and interventions as prescribed, adhering to established protocols and safety standards.
- Collaborate closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized patient care plans.
- Monitor patient vital signs and clinical status continuously, recognizing and responding promptly to changes or emergencies.
- Document all nursing care, patient interactions, and clinical observations accurately and thoroughly in the electronic health record system.
- Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatments, and discharge instructions to promote understanding and compliance.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment, ensuring all equipment is functional and supplies are adequately stocked.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and adhere to hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Skills:
The required skills such as patient assessment and reassessment, medication administration, and clinical documentation are essential for delivering safe and effective care in the emergency department. Proficiency in rapid decision-making and prioritization enables the nurse to manage multiple patients with varying degrees of urgency during night shifts. Effective communication skills facilitate collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and ensure clear information exchange with patients and families. Preferred skills like trauma certification enhance the nurse's ability to respond to complex emergencies and improve patient outcomes. Familiarity with electronic health record systems supports accurate documentation and streamlines workflow, contributing to overall departmental efficiency.
