TRAVEL: Domestic and International travel may be required to fulfill the requirements of the position.

ASRT, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of ASRT, Inc. and will be assigned to the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic and Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), Division of Scientific Resources (DSR), Biotechnology Core Facility Branch (BCFB) at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide epidemiological and laboratory capacity support.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Bioinformatician provides database management and bioinformatic support for the Biotechnology Core Facility Branch (BCFB) of Division of Scientific Resources (DSR) to aid in surveillance and outbreak investigations of bacterial pathogens. The responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the tasks that are common to all Database Management and Bioinformatic Subtasks.

Major Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assists with data systems to track foodborne bacterial isolates sequenced at BCFB, state public health laboratories, and academic partners and provide reports in compliance with BCFB Quality Management Systems, Laboratory Information Management Systems, or Quality Assurance and Quality Control Programs.
  • Assists with development and implementation of tools for bioinformatic analysis of bacterial whole genome sequences.
  • Performs quality control, assembly, annotation and analysis of genetic subtyping data.
  • Assists in the research and develop approaches for the identification of unique genetic markers of foodborne bacteria pathogens.
  • Assists with the management of genetic subtyping data sequence files and databases, including uploads to NCBI or other similar sequence data banks.
  • Assists with the development of standard operating procedures for bioinformatics analyses.
  • Maintains accurate records of genetic subtyping data, outbreak detection, and surveillance activities in compliance with the Quality Management System.
  • Assists with outbreak response activities during national and international foodborne disease outbreaks.
  • Fulfills mandatory BioSafety and IT security training requirements.
  • Travels to 1) provide training to enhance the capacity of the local/international public health sector 2) provide outbreak response efforts during national and international disease outbreaks 3) present findings at scientific meetings.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education And Experience

  • Master's Degree, or other advanced degree, in public health, epidemiology, computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, biological sciences or a field related to the requirements of the position..

Required

  • Demonstrated experience with a broad range of data analysis and management and skills and working with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience with development and management of a complex relational database.
  • Experience working with statistical software such as SAS, R, Stata, or similar software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Access and Excel.
  • Organizational skills demonstrating high attention to detail and the ability to organize multiple priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required to work within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work independently and yet maintain the flexibility to respond to requests for support of ongoing projects.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Comfort working in a fast paced and highly interdisciplinary environment.
  • Experience scripting in at least one language (Python, R, or shell preferred).
  • Basic statistics training.
  • Familiarity with the following is helpful:
    • UNIX command line bioinformatics tools.
    • Use of version control systems and code repositories (e.g., GitHub).
    • Analysis of next generation sequencing data, including QC, alignment, quantification, or phylogeny tools.
Language Skills

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

REQUIREMENT: Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident or have authorization for employment in the United States.
