Description:
The Payroll Supervisor provides strategic and operational leadership for the payroll processing team, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll services across the organization
This role oversees daily operations, mentors team members, resolves escalated issues, and partners with internal departments to support organizational goals
The Supervisor also contributes to process improvements, policy updates, and system enhancements, serving as a key liaison between payroll and leadership
Team Leadership & Oversight
Lead and mentor a team of payroll coordinators and/or assistants, overseeing day-to-day operations and workload management
Conduct regular 1:1s, provide performance feedback, and support professional development
Act as a role model for the team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Payroll Operations & Compliance
Oversee the preparation and processing of biweekly and special payrolls, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with federal, state, and local laws
Review and approve complex payroll transactions, corrections, and exception reports
Monitor compliance with internal controls, organizational policies, and audit requirements
Issue Resolution & Escalation
Serve as the escalation point for payroll-related issues, working closely with HR, Benefits, Timekeeping, and Finance to resolve discrepancies
Investigate and resolve errors related to pay, timekeeping, and tax deductions, ensuring employee satisfaction and compliance
System Oversight & Enhancements
Partner with the Payroll Systems Analyst and IT to support system upgrades, testing, and enhancements in UKG, Workday, or other platforms
Participate in user acceptance testing (UAT) and help implement automation initiatives that improve accuracy and efficiency
Policy & Process Improvement
Assist in developing, reviewing, and updating payroll procedures and policies to align with best practices and regulatory changes
Identify areas for streamlining and automation and champion LEAN initiatives across the team
Audit & Reporting
Support internal and external audits by ensuring proper documentation and timely responses
Generate and analyze payroll reports and metrics to identify trends, errors, and opportunities for improvement
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with HR, Finance, Legal, and department leaders to address payroll impacts related to organizational changes, acquisitions, and special projects
Attend interdepartmental meetings and provide payroll guidance for new initiatives and strategic planning.
~ Travel: Less than 10% of the time may be required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of 5 years of payroll experience, with at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory role
Bachelor's degree in accounting, business management, or a related field or experience in lieu of Knowledge, skills, and ability requirements:
Proficiency in payroll systems (e.g., UKG, Workday) and MS Office Suite, particularly Excel
Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll regulations
Proven ability to lead, develop, and manage a team
