Technical Director (In-Person)
Job Summary
You will own the technical execution of live shows, maintain reliable support systems, and make confident on-the-fly decisions during broadcasts. The role spans planning, setup, live switching, troubleshooting, and post-show wrap, while collaborating closely with production, engineering, scenic, audio, graphics, and talent teams.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain a reliable system for technical support across programs and events
- Monitor audio and mixing, including audio recordings, throughout productions
- Oversee proper lighting as predetermined in production meetings
- Ensure productions are distraction-free and technically well-supported by all support roles
- Produce technical drawings and communicate with scene supervisors to validate planned processes
- Recruit and train control room and technical crew; uphold high standards of performance and safety
- Update and maintain production technologies; ensure proper maintenance and installation
- Keep detailed records of warranties and licensing agreements for gear
- Work with technical, logistical, and production teams to source and manage equipment, crew, staging, video, lighting, and other broadcast-related items
- Operate visual switching equipment under the guidance and direction of the Director
- Provide direction and make decisions regarding technical projects and workflows
- Execute on-the-fly changes: switching shots, camera angles, graphics, and more
- Collaborate with scenic designers to ensure proper set design and equipment placement
- Monitor video broadcasting equipment and resolve technical issues promptly
- Formulate technical plans for productions and certify equipment readiness for broadcast
- Train the control room crew on proper equipment use, care, and maintenance
Key Success Indicators
- 3+ years managing in-studio and/or live event productions of varying scale
- 3+ years of end-to-end project ownership from kickoff to delivery
- Proven ability to independently manage multiple departments and key individuals in a fast-paced environment
- Experience working with third-party partners and vendors; leading contractor teams
- Strong knowledge of live events and studio productions
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills
- Familiarity with project management tools and best practices (Asana, Jira, Trello, Smartsheet, monday.com)
- Strong attention to detail with an in-depth understanding of broadcasting, production, and crew management
- Knowledge of current esports trends and general gaming
- Proficiency with Google Workspace (Gmail, Sheets, Docs, Tasks, Keep)
- Willingness to collaborate across departments
- Ability to perform under pressure during live broadcasts
Preferred Tools and Experience (Nice to Have)
- Live switchers (e.g., Ross Carbonite/Vision, Blackmagic ATEM, Grass Valley)
- Routing and signal workflows (SDI/NDI), intercom/comms (Clear-Com), tally, and monitoring
- Audio consoles (e.g., Yamaha QL/CL, Behringer X32) and Dante networking
- Graphics/playout systems (e.g., Viz, Singular.live, LiveText/NewBlue, vMix) and media servers (e.g., Resolume)
- Replay systems (e.g., EVS, 3Play) and basic IP/IT networking for broadcast
