Position Overview
Gwinnett County Public Schools, the largest school district in Georgia serving 143 schools, is seeking a motivated Junior Telecommunications Technician to join our Telecommunications team within the Technology & Innovation Division. This position offers an excellent opportunity for career growth and hands-on experience in a dynamic educational environment. The successful candidate will travel to various school locations (approximately 90% of the time) to install, maintain, and troubleshoot telecommunications equipment including VoIP phone systems, intercom systems, and network infrastructure. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with diverse teams across departments and thrives in a collaborative environment focused on maintaining critical communications infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, move, patch, and troubleshoot VoIP phone systems across district locations
- Retrofit and upgrade phone equipment as needed
- Manage FoIP (Fax over IP) and traditional POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) line issues by submitting tickets to AT&T and coordinating with relevant stakeholders including Facilities, Safety & Security dispatch, and other departments
- Troubleshoot and maintain intercom systems, including IP modules and bell schedules
- Access ceiling grid areas to troubleshoot data connections, check for loose connections, and inspect equipment status
- Trace and patch cables for phones and intercom equipment using appropriate testing tools
- Utilize web-based management interfaces to diagnose and resolve connectivity issues
- Respond to and resolve ServiceNow incident tickets in a timely and professional manner
- Maintain accurate inventory records of telecommunications equipment
- Collaborate effectively with various teams across departments, including IT, Facilities, Safety & Security, and School Administration
- Proactively communicate status updates to stakeholders and coordinate with internal teams and external vendors
- Travel daily to multiple school locations across Gwinnett County (mileage reimbursed)
- Work collaboratively with a team of 6 telecommunications professionals

Skills and Requirements
Required Qualifications
- 1-2 years of experience in telecommunications, networking, VoIP systems, or related technical field
- Basic networking knowledge (understanding of concepts such as PoE, IP addressing, network connectivity, VoIP)
- Valid driver's license and reliable personal vehicle for daily travel
- Ability to work independently after initial training period (2-3 months)
- Strong interpersonal and social skills for working effectively across multiple departments
- Excellent customer service skills and professional demeanor when interacting with school staff and around students
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for coordinating with stakeholders and vendors
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Teams, Outlook, Excel)
- Ability to pass required background check for working in school environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Low voltage cabling experience, including the ability to pull and terminate Cat5e/Cat6 cables
- Experience with structured cabling systems and cable tracing
- Experience with enterprise telephony platforms such as Alcatel Lucent, Cisco, Avaya, or cloud-based solutions (Microsoft Teams, Zoom Phone, etc.)
- Knowledge of SIP trunking and cloud PBX concepts
- Experience with intercom systems (Rauland Borg or similar)
- Understanding of POTS lines and FoIP
- CompTIA A+, Network+, or similar technical certifications
- Experience working in educational or government environments
- Flexibility to work occasional before-hours or after-hours as needed
