Job Summary

We’re seeking a talented, hands-on Composite Manufacturing Engineer to develop concepts, build, and refine our internal fabrication capabilities. You’ll own critical elements of composite process design, tooling development, and fabrication execution—helping shape Vigilance’s next-generation manufacturing workflows. This role is ideal for an ambitious engineer with 2–5 years of experience who thrives in fast-paced, problem-solving environments and wants to grow into a technical leader. The ideal candidate thinks in processes and systems, not in parts and components. He/she thrives in turning ideas and vision into reality, constantly auditioning novel concepts to improve how things are made. The candidate should be a self-motivated, curious, and deliberate analytical thinker who is eager to grow and take the lead. He/she thrives in ambiguous work environments where scripts or rubrics often do not exist because we are doing things that have not been done before.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical and Composite Materials Engineering

• Composite materials design and analysis
• Execute ply cutting, layup, bagging, bonding, curing, and trimming of composite structures using hand layup and compression molding methods.
• Define and document production processes for both planar and complex geometries, including tooling preparation and post-processing workflows.
• Support development of out-of-autoclave and stretch-forming processes for prototype and low-rate production.

Tooling & Machine Design

• Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and oversight of fabrication of custom tooling using CAM, CNC, and/or additive manufacturing workflows.
• Design or adapt custom shop equipment and simple mechanical systems to support in-house production capabilities.
• Maintain and improve tooling maintenance, surface prep, and storage practices.

Manufacturing Process Development & Documentation

• Translate composite best practices into clear, repeatable work instructions and manufacturing playbooks.
• Support process qualification efforts and provide input into inspection and quality control criteria.
• Support and assist hands-on fabrication with Vigilance technicians and other teammates.

Technical Writing & Proposal Support

• Provide technical input on manufacturing approach and feasibility for proposals and new programs.
• Collaborate across engineering, operations, and R&D teams to shape technology roadmaps and part design trade studies.
• Draft technical reports and documents in compliance with on-going research efforts and in support of bid & proposal efforts

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
• Minimum 2-5 years of hands-on experience in manufacturing, including advanced materials fabrication, bonding, assemblies, and post-processing operations.
• Expertise in tooling development, including designing and implementing bonding, machining, and assembly fixtures.
• Proficiency in composite material systems, including resin systems, prepreg materials, adhesives, and structural core materials.
• Experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA)
• Demonstrated hands-on experience (personal passion projects, labs, garage builds, etc.)
• Strong leadership skills with experience in guiding and training engineering teams.
• Excellent technical writing, communication, and documentation skills, with the ability to lead and mentor cross-functional teams.

Desired Competencies

• Exposure to defense or aerospace manufacturing environments.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to manage complex manufacturing challenges.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
• Familiarity with government and defense contracting environments is a plus.
• Proficiency in relevant numerical design software including finite element analysis (FEA), and manufacturing-specific tools.
