Location Augusta University Our Health Sciences Campus: 1120 15th Street, Augusta, GA 30912 Our Summerville Campus: 2500 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30904 College/Department Information The fellow will become part of a team to assess mechanisms for the decline in cognitive function/mental processing during normal aging or in disorders including Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy. The position is in the laboratory of Dr. Ferenc Deak (Augusta Univ., GA), who has a long-standing interest in understanding the molecular regulation of synaptic neurotransmission. Currently interest is on recently identified variants associated with AD and epilepsy and their effect on neuronal networks and cognitive function. On-going studies include live fluorescence imaging of synaptic transmission and plasticity, long-term potentiation, and whole cell patch clamp recordings of neuronal activity in a variety of transgenic rodent models. Planned experiments involve human cells derived organoids. For more details, please visit our laboratory's website: Job Summary Participate in project planning and perform electrophysiological experiments in rodents. Participate in development of research protocols while ensuring adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines. Perform a variety of experimental studies including animal behavior, cell biology and molecular biology experiments. Experiments may include but not be limited to performing animal surgery, patch-clamp electrophysiology, microinjection, behavioral testing, genotyping, western blot, real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry and various microscopy and imaging techniques. Analyze results of experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques and, if necessary, develop special computer programs to facilitate analysis. Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants and other research personnel engaged in research activities and/or related laboratory work. Advise principal investigators, other postdocs, students and other research personnel on research techniques, procedures and other technological aspects of research activities. Compose articles for publication in scientific journals; review articles prepared by others. Analyze results of experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques and, if necessary, develop special computer programs to facilitate analysis. Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature; summarize and evaluate findings; develop derivative applications of techniques developed by own research activities or reported by other research projects. Presents findings at scientific meetings locally, nationally, and internationally. Compose articles for publication in scientific journals; review articles prepared by others. Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants and other research personnel engaged in research activities and/or related laboratory work. Advise principal investigators, other Postdocs, students and other research personnel on research techniques, procedures and other technological aspects of research activities. Operate microscopes, computer-linked analytical equipment, dedicated computers, and other complex scientific equipment; instruct others in operation of equipment. Perform all other related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Ph.D. or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university. Preferred Qualifications Expertise in global cerebral ischemia and traumatic brain injury animal models, breeding and maintaining mouse transgenic colonies, and measurement of serum and tissue hormone levels. Expertise in mouse animal behavioral tests. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases or willingness to learn. SKILLS Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented and ability to prioritize tasks. ABILITIES Ability to complete work and meet deadlines.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and work as a team.
Willingness and ability to work with research animals.
Ability to work independently with only general supervision. Shift/Salary/Benefits Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required). Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position. Recruitment Period: Until Filled.
