About the Position

Job Title: RN - MedSurg/Tele Profession: RN Specialty: MedSurg/Tele Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years Med/Tele RN experience License: BLS required; EKG Rhythm exam as part of onboarding Certifications: ACLS preferred; National Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification preferred but not required Must-Have: Trach care and chest tube management skills PIV starts, glucometer experience, and insulin drip management Strong clinical assessment and med-surg nursing skills IV insertion and care, central line management Wound care and post-op monitoring Cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation Care coordination with interdisciplinary teams Discharge planning and patient education Description: RN position in MedSurg/Tele. Facility has 637 licensed beds with Level 1 Trauma Designation. It is a teaching hospital with a Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center. Patient types include post/pre-cardiac patients and step-down ICU patients. Common diagnoses include CHF, COPD, STEMI, NSTEMI, and SEPSIS. Patient ratio is RN: 1:4-6 with CNAs assisting 2-3 per shift. CNA duties include assisting with vital signs, glucose checks, baths, feeding, ambulating patients, assisting with turning patients, and hourly rounding. Unit secretaries are available from 7 AM to 11 PM and transition to house-wide call from 11 PM to 7 AM. Charge nurses are assigned to each unit. Phlebotomy is primarily lab-collected with nurses drawing from central venous lines. A PICC team is available for central line management. Support includes resource nurses for discharge and other specialized teams. Telemetry monitoring is provided 24/7. EMR utilized is EPIC. Technology includes Alaris IV Pumps, Pyxis for medication dispensing, and Philips monitors. Floating may occur to all MedSurg telemetry units in-house. Weekend rotation includes 5-6 weekend shifts out of 12 on a 6-week schedule. Expectation to work one shift of each major holiday is required. RTO requests must be approved by management. Navy scrubs are designated for RNs, while LPNs wear ceil blue. The work environment is busy, with a strong emphasis on teamwork.
