Unit Details

• 23-Bed Med/Surg Telemetry Unit
• Average Census: 10–23 Patients
• First-Time Travelers Welcome
• Minimum Experience Required: 2 Years Med/Tele RN Experience

Patient Population

This high-acuity Med/Surg Telemetry unit cares for a diverse adult patient population including:
• Orthopedic surgeries: hip, knee, shoulder replacements
• Bariatric surgeries
• Spinal surgeries: TLIF, ACDF, lumbar fusion, etc.
• Post-operative surgical patients
• Patients with acute and chronic medical conditions
• Common co-morbidities including CHF, diabetes, hypertension, infections, and electrolyte imbalances

Clinical Skills Required

Strong Med/Surg & Telemetry nursing experience

Trach care & chest tube management
PIV starts & central line care
Glucommander & insulin drip management
Heparin drips & cardiac drips (non-titratable)
Telemetry interpretation & cardiac monitoring
Wound care & post-op monitoring
Patient education & discharge planning
Ability to work in a fast-paced Level 1 Trauma environment

Certifications Required

• BLS Required
• Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR) Certification Required

• Candidate must pass EKG competency testing during compliance
  • ACLS Preferred
  • Med-Surg or Nephrology Certification Preferred but not required

Staffing Ratios

• RN Ratio: 1:4–6
• LPN Ratio: 1:4–6
• CNA Support: 2–3 per shift

Department Support

CNAs assist with vitals, glucose checks, feeding, ambulation, baths, turning, and transport support
Unit Secretary coverage available
Resource & Discharge Nurses available
PICC Team support
24/7 RT, Hospitalist, and Intensivist coverage
Centralized Telemetry Monitoring

Technology & Equipment

• EMR: EPIC
• IV Pumps: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
• Monitors: Phillips

Unit equipment includes:
• Chest tubes, JP/Hemovac drains
• External fixators
• Portable oxygen systems
• PCA pain pumps
• Suction machines
• Bladder scanners
• Glucommander systems
• Cardiac telemetry monitoring

Floating

• May float to all adult Med/Surg and Telemetry units within the hospital

Orientation

• 1 Day Hospital Orientation & Educational Modules
• 2 Days Unit/Department Orientation

Scheduling

12-Hour Shifts:
• Days: 7A–7P
• Nights: 7P–7A

Weekend Requirement:
• 5–6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule

On-Call: None

Holiday Requirement:
• One shift for each major holiday rotation:

• Thanksgiving/Day After
• Christmas Eve or Christmas Day
• New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day
