Summary
A Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for managing, maintaining, and optimizing database systems to ensure high performance, security, availability, and data integrity. This role supports application development teams and business operations by ensuring reliable data storage, access, and governance across enterprise environments.
Key Responsibilities
• Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain database systems in development, test, and production environments.
• Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and optimize queries, indexes, and storage for efficiency.
• Implement, manage, and test backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures to ensure business continuity.
• Enforce database security policies, user access controls, encryption, and compliance standards.
• Troubleshoot and resolve database issues, errors, and outages in a timely manner.
• Collaborate with application developers and data teams to design, deploy, and support database-driven solutions.
• Maintain database standards, naming conventions, and operational procedures.
• Apply patches, upgrades, and database migrations while minimizing downtime and risk.
• Conduct capacity planning, performance tuning, and growth forecasting for future scalability.
• Ensure compliance with data governance, regulatory requirements, and internal policies.
• Monitor data integrity, consistency, and availability across multiple systems and platforms.
• Design and implement high-availability, replication, and failover architectures.
• Document database architectures, configurations, and operational workflows.
• Evaluate and implement new database technologies and best practices.
• Provide technical guidance and support to junior DBAs and cross-functional teams.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• 3-6 years of hands-on experience as a Database Administrator.
• Strong expertise in SQL and relational database platforms such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL.
• Experience with database backup, recovery, performance tuning, and security best practices.
• Solid understanding of database architecture, indexing, and query optimization.
Preferred Skills / Duties
• Professional certifications such as Oracle DBA, Microsoft SQL Server, or equivalent.
• Experience with cloud-based database solutions (AWS RDS, Azure SQL, Google Cloud SQL).
• Knowledge of NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, Cassandra, or DynamoDB.
• Experience designing and managing high-availability, replication, and disaster recovery systems.
• Familiarity with automation, scripting, and database monitoring tools.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
