Summary

This position is located within the Diagnostic Imaging Services at the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center. The incumbent serves as a Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist at the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the 2 equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program - evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree - accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology - Radiography (ARRT) (R)
  • May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria)
  • All persons employed in VHA as a DRT on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title - series and grade held - including positive education and certification that are part of the basic requirements of the DRT occupation
  • For employees who do not meet all of the basic requirements in this standard - but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it - the following provisions apply: (1) DRTs that require a certification - may be reassigned - promoted up to and including the full performance (journeyman) level - or changed to lower grade within the occupation - but may not be promoted beyond the journey level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions
  • (2) DRTs that require a certification only at higher grade levels must meet the certification requirement before they can be promoted to those higher grade levels
  • (3) DRTs who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed - on a temporary or permanent basis - until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard
  • (4) DRTs initially grandfathered into this occupation - who subsequently obtain additional education and/or certification that meet all of the basic requirements of this qualification standard must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupation
  • (5) Employees who are retained as a DRT under this provision and subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of reentry as a DRT Grade Determinations: GS-12 Experience
  • At least one year of the following types of experience comparable to the next lower grade level that fully meets the KSAs at that level
  • Assignment Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist
  • For all assignments above the full performance level - the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope - complexity (difficulty) - and range of variety - and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time
  • DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments: Assignment to this grade level is restricted to those serving as the chief radiologic technologist at medical facilities with comprehensive and complex radiographic and imaging programs
  • Employees in these assignments plan and direct the radiologic technology program at active - affiliated medical centers with critical care and emergent inpatient services - and have full supervisory responsibility for a large staff of subordinate personnel - including GS-10 DRTs - at least one subordinate team leader or supervisor at the next lower grade level - and may include clerical or administrative support staff
  • At this level - the radiologic technology program typically includes the full variety of comprehensive and complex modalities

  • *Ability to assess - plan - and evaluate the delivery of radiologic technology services at the facility
  • Preferred Experience: Prior experience as a modality (CT - US - MRI - IR - diagnostic x-ray) supervisor or chief technologist

Duties

  • Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The Chief Radiologic Technologist has full responsibility for technical aspects and patient care functions within the General Radiology - CT - MRI - Ultrasound - and lnterventional Radiology sections and has supervisory responsibility over the staff in these sections within the Atlanta VA Health Care System to currently include direct-report of 6 first-line section supervisors and 1 Lead technologist
  • The Chief Technologist serves as the second-line supervisor for the non­supervisory diagnostic radiologic technologists and medical instrument technicians
  • Typical duties may include - but are not limited to: Planning - organizing - and directing the ongoing developments of the Radiology service - as well as analyzing - evaluating - advising and coordinating clinical activities as well as short term and long-term strategic planning
  • The incumbent is also responsible for the higher-level review of the VA0750 performance evaluations for the technologist staff reporting to the first-line section supervisors
  • This includes the 2nd level supervisory responsibilities of all Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists and Medical Instrument Technologists
  • Plans work schedules to assure an even flow and distribution of work

  • The incumbent functions independently - working within the framework of identified objectives/ strategic planning for the Health Care System - Medical Center and the Imaging Service

  • Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures

  • The incumbent is familiar with and provides age-specific care that is appropriate to the cognitive - emotional - cultural - and chronological maturation needs of the patient
  • The primary age of Veterans receiving services is typically between 18 and 80 years of age
  • The age demographic is rapidly changing due to the large influx of younger veteran patients - and increased female veterans - returning from OIF and OIEF between the ages of 18-60 years of age that require care
  • Incumbent protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws - Federal regulations - VA statutes and policy - and VHA policy
  • The incumbent embraces a continuous culture of safety for veterans - their families - visitors - and employees and will be responsible for promoting a culture of safety
  • The incumbent will fully cooperate in efforts to improve patient safety and eradicate potential events - including reporting events resulting in actual or potential injury to patients
