Apprentice Line Worker

Under direct supervision, the employee operates a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of power distribution systems. This includes vehicles and machinery such as dump trucks, backhoes, bucket trucks, and specialized tools like voltage ohmmeters, breakers, and hydraulic equipment. The employee performs routine maintenance on equipment, inspects and reports any malfunctions, and ensures that tools and machinery are kept in safe and operable condition.

The role involves manual work to maintain right-of-ways, ditches, holding ponds, substations, and other utility areas. Tasks include tree trimming, debris removal, mowing, digging trenches or holes, pouring concrete, and assisting with the installation and maintenance of underground and overhead structures, poles, cables, transformers, and street lighting systems. The employee also participates in operations involving utility and privately owned generators and may assist with fiber optic telecommunications systems. Safety precautions and the use of proper equipment are emphasized to protect both the crew and the public.

The position requires flexibility to work outside normal business hours, including weekends, holidays, and during emergency situations such as severe weather or power outages. Responsibilities include transporting materials, maintaining supplies, responding to public inquiries, operating two-way radios, and assisting with seasonal tasks such as installing and removing decorations and lights. Additionally, the employee is required to participate in the Accredited Apprentice Lineman Training program, which includes classroom instruction, hands-on testing, pole climbing, and out-of-town travel, to develop the skills necessary for progression within the utility field.
