Purpose of Job
The purpose of this job is to work with the Director of Public Relations and other departments and offices in Columbia County to coordinate public education, outreach, interaction, and engagement efforts related to services, programs, and events the county provides. The position will also assist the Director of Public Relations with implementing general communications and publicity programs to residents, organizations, students, and businesses.
Job Related Requirements
Work Schedule: Generally, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday. Week to week schedules may vary and include some extended and flexible hours based on evening and weekend responsibilities.
May be required to work on some evenings and weekends.
May be required to work during emergency situations.
Must work cooperatively with others.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Oversees the development and execution of the county's day-to-day multimedia campaign strategy aimed at informing the public on a wide variety of topics from all county departments; responsible for providing content for these campaigns; develops, researches, writes, edits, designs and produces , various reports and communications materials, including articles, reports, brochures, newsletters, and other publications: develops, designs, proofreads, or writes the publication of various documentation; prepares/edits speeches, correspondence, or projects as requested by the Director of Public Relations
Develops, implements, and supports public engagement strategies, tactics, measurement techniques, and tools to promote and increase civic engagement.
Provides information to the public regarding County government under the direction of the Director of Public Relations: keeps the public informed about county programs, services, activities, and issues through daily communications via social media, website, etc.
Assists in monitoring local, state, and national newspapers, television/radio broadcasts, and other sources for information pertinent to county government; identification of news/information with potential impact on Columbia County Government; brings pertinent news issues/articles to attention of the Director of Public Relations.
Assists with development and maintenance of information for publication on the County's web sites and Intranet, social media sites, information channels, bulletin boards, or other media.
Assists with coordination, planning, and execution of public outreach events.
Assists with development, implementation, and maintenance of strategic plans for public information, communications, and public relations; assists the Director of Public Relations in developing, executing and monitoring a consistent/positive image of county.
Attends meetings, serves on committees, and makes presentations as needed. Assists in organizing, publicizing, and/or coordination of special events/activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, or closely related field; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience and/or training that includes public/media relations, communications, marketing, graphic design and desktop publishing; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Some video production experience preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of public relations, media relations, social media, and community engagement techniques.
Knowledge of graphic design techniques and printing processes preferred.
Experience in designing and implementing in-person and online feedback tools and techniques.
Experience in design and production of promotional and informational materials.
Experience in organizing projects, creating organizational plans, meeting deadlines, and managing details.
Ability to communicate effectively by written and oral means.
Ability to develop and deliver public presentations.
Ability to compile, organize, prepare, and maintain an assortment of records, reports, and information in an effective manner
and according to office and/or governmental regulations.
Ability to communicate effectively with community members, co-workers, supervisors, department heads, and other staff members.
Familiarity with graphic design systems, web content management systems, online newsletters, and social media applications
highly desirable.
Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.
Ability to work in a team environment and independently.
Ability to plan, organize, and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
Ability to comprehend and apply the regulations and procedures of the office.
Ability to utilize a personal computer and various software programs for daily assignments.
Ability to operate office and audio-visual equipment.
A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
