The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine invites applications for a full-time, 12-month faculty position in the Department of Anatomy that also includes appointment as the Director of the Gross Anatomy Laboratory . Hiring rank will be based on experience and accomplishments. This program also requires expertise and experience in gross anatomy laboratory oversight and management. Anatomy is one of three basic science departments in the College and is responsible for providing anatomical curricular content in the osteopathic medical curriculum. The primary responsibilities of this position involve teaching in the first- and second-year systems and laboratory courses. We are a departmental team with backgrounds and research interests in a wide range of fields, including developmental anatomy, molecular biology, classical anatomy, craniofacial development, applied neuroscience, biological anthropology, and medical education. The selected candidate will support Burrell College's organizational health initiatives, focusing on enhancing leadership, promoting clarity of purpose, improving communication, and reinforcing a respectful, purpose-driven culture. This role is key to fostering a healthy, high-performing organization that values integrity, transparency, and collaboration. Examples of Duties Faculty Member:
- Instruct first and second-year osteopathic medical students.
- Develop board-style (COMLEX/USMLE) exam questions.
- Participate in student mentoring and advising.
- Contribute to curricular development, implementation, and assessment.
- Provide service to the institution, community, and profession.
- Engage in scholarly activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Laboratory Oversight: Manage daily operations of the anatomy lab, including the care, custody, and inventory of cadaveric specimens, anatomical models, and dissection tools, while ensuring a safe and collaborative learning environment.
- Personnel & Compliance: Supervise lab staff and technicians, maintain administrative records, and ensure full compliance with institutional, local, state, and federal regulations under the Department Chair's guidance.
- Anatomical Gifts Program: Administer all aspects of the body donor program, including donor communications, transportation logistics, chain-of-custody documentation, and coordination with funeral service providers and anatomical boards.
- Educational & Outreach Support: Facilitate access to lab resources for students and faculty, support lab practicals and prosections, and coordinate outreach efforts with external organizations using anatomical materials.
- Public Representation & Reporting: Serve as the public face of the program, respond to donor inquiries, conduct public relations visits, and compile regular reports for the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology.
- Professional Engagement: Maintain active membership in relevant professional associations and stay connected with alternative cadaver sources at other institutions.
- Demonstrated passion for teaching, mentoring, and student engagement in collaborative academic settings.
- Experience managing gross anatomy labs and handling anatomical gifts in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Knowledge of cadaver acquisition, tracking, storage, and disposition, including liaison work with anatomical boards and funeral services.
- Ability to teach across multiple anatomical sciences (e.g., gross anatomy, histology, embryology, neuroanatomy, cell biology).
- Familiarity with medical imaging modalities such as CT, MRI, and ultrasound for instructional use.
- Understanding of lab safety, hazardous materials compliance, and experience organizing donor memorial events and managing teaching specimen collections.
- Earned terminal degree (PhD, DO, MD, DSc, etc.), by start date, although candidates with a Master's degree earned from an anatomical science program or several years teaching in the anatomical sciences may be considered as well.
- Experience teaching an anatomical science at the undergraduate or graduate/professional level.
- Record of or demonstrated potential for growth in scholarly activity or research in the candidate's chosen field.
- Minimum 5 years' experience in an academic setting and mortuary or gross anatomical preparatory experience essential.
- Experience supervising laboratory personnel and managing teaching specimen inventory, cadaveric material, and anatomical models.
- Post-doctoral experience
- Experience or interest in developing and using active teaching methods such as team-based learning, 'flipped classroom', problem-based learning, distance learning, interactive large group presentation, audience response systems.
- Experience teaching in a medical education setting.
- Experience overseeing cadaver dissection labs or gross anatomy laboratory operations, including supervision of technical staff.

- Must be capable of assisting with moving cadavers into Burrell College laboratory storage facilities; relocation to dissection tables; removal of remains and tissue waste to crematoria or return to originating institution as specified.
- Capable of participating with re-crating/packaging dissected cadavers for return shipment to destinations of origin or disposition as required.
- Capable of standing for long periods of time in the lab.
